Pappano and Kosky on Creating a Ring
| From time to time some information related to Wagner comes along that is outside our normal programming but is so interesting that we think it should be presented to our members. This pre-recorded interview is one such case. Two well-known practitioners of the art of presenting opera talk about creating a new Ring for London’s Royal Opera. In a remarkably candid conversation, Barrie Kosky and Antonio Pappano talk about creating a new Ring for London’s Royal Opera. The conversation between these two is so insightful that it bears viewing by Wagner enthusiasts everywhere. |
Frances will introduce the video which has a running time of about an hour. There will be a brief intermission at about the half-way mark. Discussion will follow at the end.

Have you ever wondered how an opera director and music director come to the stage with their interpretation of a Wagner opera? How about creating a Ring Cycle. Are they mad or are they geniuses?
Hear two creators talk about their work creating Das Rheingold for London’s Royal Opera in 2023. Barrie Kosky (direction) and Antonio Pappano (conductor) tell all in an interview just before opening night in London.
| Barrie Kosky is an Australian theatre, film and opera director who practices globally. He has directed Hollander, Meistersinger and the Ring. Meistersinger at Bayreuth is notable not only for being a very fine production (ask Frances) but also Mr. Kosky was the first person who was not a member of the Wagner family to direct this work at the Festival. This 2017 production was the first time a Jewish director worked at Bayreuth. |
