ABOUT US
Founded in 1975, the Toronto Wagner Society is an active group of people from different backgrounds with a common interest principally in the music dramas, but also the life and the writings of Richard Wagner.
Monthly meetings take place from September to May, and offer a variety of events – from lectures, talks and interviews to video screenings, debates and reviews. The Society has also hosted a number of successful roundtable discussions with cast members of Wagner operas in Toronto.
In the past, our guests have included singers, conductors, musicians, opera directors, musicologists and critics.
The Society has often participated in symposia and conferences on music in general and Wagner’s music dramas in particular, providing both speakers and financing.
The Society’s newsletter, Wagner News, appears three to four times a year. It features articles, reviews and information about Wagner performances worldwide, as well as details of upcoming meetings. It is posted on this website under the tab ‘newsletter’. The newsletter is e-mailed to members (members who are not on email continue to receive mailed copies.)
The Society maintains a scholarship fund to assist young singers. We currently use the proceeds of the fund to make a yearly donation to the Ensemble Studio of the Canadian Opera Company.
