Founded in 1975, the Toronto Wagner Society is an active group of people from different backgrounds with a common interest principally in the music dramas, but also the life and the writings of Richard Wagner.
Monthly meetings take place from September to May, and offer a variety of events – from lectures, talks and interviews to video screenings, debates and reviews.
In the past, our guests have included singers, conductors, musicians, opera directors, musicologists and critics.
The Society has often participated in symposia and conferences on music in general and Wagner’s music dramas in particular, providing both speakers and financing.
The Society’s newsletter, Wagner News, appears three to four times a year. It features articles, reviews and information about Wagner performances worldwide, as well as details of upcoming meetings. It is posted on this website under the tab ‘newsletter’. A link to it is included in the reminder e-blast that is sent out to all members in advance of meetings (members who are not on email continue to receive mailed copies.)
The Society maintains a scholarship fund to assist young singers. We currently used the proceeds of the fund to make a yearly donation to the Ensemble Studio of the Canadian Opera Company.
