Stephen Clarke on the Recorded History of Wagner

We are excited to announce that on March 24th at 7 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) (Toronto/New York/Boston time zone), we will be hosting a meeting with Stephen Clarke at the Arts and Letters Club. 14 Elm Street.

A long time music lover, Mr. Clarke became the trustee of Dr. John Stratton’s (1931-2001) large collection of recordings in 2001. Now housed at the University of Toronto, the Stratton-Clarke Collection contains thousands of 78 rpm and LP records, including some unpublished works, with a special focus on opera and vocal music.

Mr. Clarke has been particularly interested in Wagnerian music and its recordings. He has been a frequent lecturer of the historic vocal library contained at the University but also for other musical institutions including our own Toronto Wagner Society.

For this visit, he will be playing excerpts from historic Wagner recordings but in addition he has been able to borrow a rare and classic recording of Lauritz Melchior and Kirsten Flagstad singing Tristan and Isolde made in 1938.

For lovers of Wagnerian music this event is not to be missed!

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

Stephen Clarke worked as a lawyer while maintaining an active interest in music. A close friend of Stratton’s, Clarke became his estate trustee and continued to add to the collection after Stratton’s death, including the addition of thousands of digital recordings.
